If you share your home with a dog or a cat, you already know the drill. You vacuum the sofa on a Saturday. By Sunday afternoon it looks like nothing happened. The cushions are covered, the throws are covered, and somehow the hair has migrated onto your work trousers too, despite the fact that the dog has not been anywhere near your wardrobe. Pet hair is relentless.
The good news is that the right tools make a real difference. Not a £200 robot vacuum or a specialist dry-cleaning habit, but a few practical, affordable items that actually work. Here is what to use and why.
Why Normal Vacuuming Is Not Enough
Most vacuum cleaners, even good ones, struggle with pet hair on fabric surfaces. The hair weaves into the fibres of sofas, cushions, and carpets rather than sitting on top of them. Running a standard vacuum head over it often just moves the hair around or clogs the attachment. You end up working harder than you should for results that disappear within a day.
The trick is to loosen the hair from the fabric before vacuuming it up. That is where grooming gloves and lint rollers come in.
Grooming Gloves: the Tool That Does Two Jobs
A pet grooming glove is one of the best purchases you can make if you have a shedding dog or cat. You wear it like a glove, run your hand over your pet in long strokes, and the silicone nodules on the palm pick up loose fur before it ends up on your furniture. Most dogs and cats enjoy it, because to them it feels like a stroke.
The same glove works on sofas, car seats, and fabric chairs: dampen the glove slightly, run it over the surface in one direction, and the static pulls the hair into a ball you can lift off in one go. Double-sided grooming gloves work even better, with a finer side for sensitive areas and a firmer side for bulk de-shedding. You can browse our pet grooming gloves to see what we currently stock.
A few tips for getting the best out of a grooming glove:
- Brush in the direction of the fur, not against it, for the first few passes
- On furniture, slightly damp hands create more static and pick up more hair
- Rinse the glove under the tap after each session and leave it to dry naturally
- For cats, introduce the glove slowly if your cat is nervous - start with short sessions and let them sniff it first
Rubber Brushes and Lint Rollers
For furniture, a rubber-bristled brush is remarkably effective at gathering up embedded hair before vacuuming. The rubber creates friction against the fabric and pulls the hair to the surface in clumps. It works on car upholstery too, which is notoriously difficult to keep clean if your dog rides with you.
Lint rollers are great for a quick tidy-up before guests arrive or for removing hair from clothing. Keep one by the door for a last-minute once-over before you leave the house. A reusable lint roller (the kind you rinse rather than peel) saves money and waste over time compared to the disposable tape versions.
The Laundry Problem
Throws and cushion covers that go through the wash often come out with the hair even more deeply embedded than when they went in, especially if the drum is cold. A few things that help:
- Run throws through a short tumble-dry cycle on low heat before washing. The heat and tumbling loosens the hair, which collects in the lint trap
- Use a washing machine drum cleaner regularly if you wash a lot of pet bedding
- Shake out fabric items vigorously before they go in, and give them a pass with a rubber brush
Staying on Top of It Day to Day
The honest truth about pet hair is that no tool eliminates it entirely. The goal is to manage it so it never builds up to the point of being overwhelming. A quick daily brush of your pet (using your grooming glove if they enjoy it) dramatically reduces shedding around the house. A weekly once-over of your sofas and a regular hoover of the carpets keeps things under control between deeper cleans.
It is not about perfection. It is about having the right tools to hand so that a house with a pet can still look like a house people actually live in, rather than a fur farm. Our pet accessories collection has everything you need to stay on top of shedding season without spending a fortune.
Your sofa will thank you. Your guests probably will too.
